Subject: COEST-COPOL-COPAR – Moscow: Russian Federation Weekly Report, 20 July 2018 The EEAS is pleased to circulate the weekly report of 20 July by the EU Delegation in Russia QUOTE
Summary:
• After a successful (at least for Putin) Helsinki summit, Moscow now waits for the calming of emotions in Washington.
• The indictment of 12 military intelligence officers and the detention of a Russian citizen in the US shed further light on Moscow's foreign interference.
• Bill on changes into the pension system passes first reading in Russian State Duma while generating limited public protest.
• ECtHR orders Russia to pay compensation in three high-profile cases including the murder of Anna Politkovskaya.
• The Federal Security Service (FSB) takes down one more high-ranking official of the Investigative Committee, confirming that the security apparatus turf wars in Russia are continuing.
• The centennial anniversary of the execution of Tsar Nikolai II and the royal family passes largely unnoticed by the political elite, as Russia is yet to come to terms with the outcome of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution.
• The trilateral gas meeting in Berlin - the first step of a newly launched process that may end up with the resolution of the issue of gas transit via Ukraine.
• Taxation reform in the oil industry - more money for the public coffers, but fewer profits for oil companies, and the looming spectre of even higher petrol prices.
• Business France, the French trade promotion agency, closes its office in Moscow following obstacles from the Russian authorities.
